Ballabhgarh Lynching: Junaid Khan, 16, was killed by mob last week on train from Delhi to Mathura

Highlights

  1. Junaid Khan, 16, was killed by mob on a train last week
  2. 4 men arrested today for instigating the mob to kill him
  3. Man who stabbed him to death still not caught
Four men including a Delhi government employee were arrested today for the murder of teenager Junaid Khan, who was stabbed to death on a train last week by a mob armed with knives. Another Delhi government employee, a food inspector, has also been identified as a suspect, but not yet arrested.

One man, identified only as Ramesh, had been arrested by the Haryana police over the weekend.

The mob that attacked Junaid Khan, 16, and his three companions including his brother Shabeer, accused them of carrying beef in their bags and was made up of about 20 people, relatives have said. The attack took place on a train running between Delhi and Mathura.

Of the four men arrested today, one abused Junaid Khan, calling him "anti-national" and a beef-eater; the three others instigated the mob that lynched the four young Muslims, the police said. The man who stabbed Junaid Khan and his brother, who survived the attack, has yet to be caught.

Police officials say that despite the train being packed with commuters, no witnesses have come forward, making it much harder to identify and arrest the killers.

The lynching of Junaid Khan triggered national protests today - in different cities, people marched as part of a campaign called "'Not In My Name" to call for an end to the recent spate of mob attacks, some of which have been undertaken by self-declared cow vigilantes who accused the victims of carrying or eating beef.

Junaid Khan was traveling home from Delhi to his village of Ballabgarh in Haryana on Thursday with his brother and two cousins when the mob turned on them.

Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad has described Junaid Khan's killing as "extremely painful and shameful" and said the government will not tolerate such attacks.
